For those aiming to pass the JLPT N4 exam, this app offers an innovative approach by combining kanji quizzes with engaging kanji stories. The app focuses on testing your knowledge of kanji, kana, English translations, and most importantly, the intriguing kanji stories that accompany each character.

Kanji stories are a popular method among learners for memorizing kanji. They involve creating personal narratives based on deconstructing kanji into smaller components called primitives—radicals or combinations of radicals—and assigning unique keywords to these primitives. These keywords help construct memorable stories for each kanji. While kanji stories have proven effective for many, they come with challenges. One significant drawback is the need to memorize approximately 2000 kanji stories, which can feel overwhelming. Additionally, the keywords assigned to primitives often diverge from the traditional meanings of radicals, complicating the process of mastering advanced levels like N1.

In contrast, relying solely on kanji etymology presents its own set of advantages. Etymology provides specific meanings for the 214 traditional radicals, simplifying the learning process. Understanding the etymology of one kanji can aid in recalling related kanji, making the overall learning experience clearer. However, around 80% of Chinese kanji are phono-semantic in nature, meaning they derive from both phonetic and semantic elements. For many kanji, only partial etymological derivations remain due to historical obscurity, limiting their usefulness in certain contexts.

Both kanji stories and etymology share the common thread of breaking down kanji into smaller elements to make comprehension easier. This aligns with the traditional method of studying kanji outlined in the ancient Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi. This text categorizes kanji into five types: pictograms, simple ideograms, compound ideographs, borrowed kanji, and phono-semantic kanji. Utilizing a blend of these approaches, along with other strategies, offers the most efficient learning path.
