The game uses a standard 52-card deck, but only 32 cards are utilized during play. Each player receives two batches of four cards, amounting to eight cards per person. The player to the right of the dealer gets the privilege of selecting the trump suit, which holds the highest value for the duration of the round. The first trick is initiated by the player who chooses the trump suit, and subsequent players must follow suit when possible. If unable to follow suit, players can play any card. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick, unless trump cards are involved, in which case the highest trump card prevails. The player who wins a trick leads the next one, continuing until all eight tricks have been completed.

Scoring and Victory

After the final trick, teams tally their winnings. Teams earning 5, 6, or 7 tricks with the trump suit receive one token. Winning the same number of tricks without the trump suit grants two tokens to the opposing team. Securing all 8 tricks results in earning three tokens, known as “Kapothi,” while a tie (4 tricks each) results in no tokens being awarded. The first team to reach 10 or more tokens claims victory and becomes the champion of Sinhala Omi.
