Mills: Classic Strategy Game

Experience the timeless strategy game known as Mills or Nine Men's Morris. This application offers a modern twist on a classic board game, also referred to as nine-man morris, mill, mills, the mill game, merels, merrills, merelles, marelles, morelles, ninepenny marl, or even Cowboy checkers.

Game Objective

In this strategic game, each player starts with nine pieces, or "men." These pieces are moved across a board with twenty-four spaces. The ultimate goal is to strategically position your pieces such that your opponent is left with either no legal moves or fewer than three pieces remaining on the board.

Gameplay Mechanics

• Placement Phase: Players alternately place their pieces on the open spaces of the board. When a player forms a "mill"—a straight row of three pieces along one of the board’s lines (not diagonally)—they can remove one of their opponent's pieces from the board. Removed pieces cannot be placed back on the board.

• Movement Phase: After all pieces have been placed, players take turns moving their pieces to adjacent spaces along the board lines. If a player forms a mill during this phase, they can still remove an opponent's piece. However, players should aim to avoid taking pieces from mills when possible.

• Flying Phase: Once a player is reduced to three pieces, these pieces can "fly," "hop," or "jump" to any unoccupied space on the board, adding an extra layer of strategy to the game.

Special Rules

• If a player is unable to make a legal move, the game ends for them.
• Any player reduced to just two pieces loses the ability to capture the opponent's pieces and consequently loses the game.
