About Animals
Animals is a memory game developed as part of an English vocabulary teaching initiative by A. Ş. Y., a student from the Foreign Languages and Coding department at Bilsem, Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi (Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi), located in İstanbul Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi. This application serves as an engaging and interactive tool designed to help students reinforce their knowledge of English words through a fun and educational experience. The game is not just a simple pastime; it is a carefully crafted learning resource that aligns with the broader mission of Bilsem, which focuses on nurturing the talents of gifted students.
Bilsem, also known as the Science and Art Center, is a specialized educational institution affiliated with the Ministry of National Education (MEB). It provides additional training for students who have been identified as having exceptional abilities in general intelligence, visual arts, or music. Unlike traditional schools, Bilsem does not serve as an alternative to formal education but rather as a supportive structure that enhances the learning experience of students within the regular school system. The center aims to help these students fully develop and utilize their unique talents, offering them opportunities to explore and excel in areas where they show particular interest and potential.
The selection of students for Bilsem is determined annually by the Ministry of National Education. For example, during the 2016-2017 academic year, students from grades 1, 2, and 3 of primary school were eligible for enrollment based on specific criteria. Once admitted, students participate in a five-stage educational program tailored to their individual needs and abilities. This structured approach ensures that each student receives personalized attention and guidance throughout their journey at Bilsem.
The first stage of the program is the Orientation Program, which lasts approximately 40 class hours and spans two months. During this phase, new students and their parents are introduced to the Bilsem environment, and efforts are made to build a common understanding and communication between all parties involved. The second stage, the Support Education Program, focuses on developing essential skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking, while integrating subjects like science, math, Turkish, social studies, foreign languages, and technology.
The third stage, the Talent Identification Program, is designed to explore a student’s potential across various disciplines. Through a series of activities, educators observe the student's interests, learning pace, curiosity, and ability to apply knowledge in real-life situations. Based on these observations, the student's specific areas of talent are identified. The fourth stage, the Special Talent Development Program, builds upon these findings by providing in-depth knowledge and advanced skills in up to two selected fields. Finally, the fifth stage, the Project Production/Management Program, allows students to work on interdisciplinary projects under the guidance of their mentors, fostering creativity, collaboration, and practical application of their learning.
