Historical Background

Initially, the pesantren functioned as an informal educational center, offering religious studies to the local community. The early days were marked by the construction of a small prayer hall (mushalla) measuring 5x6 meters, built collaboratively with the local community. During its formative years, the students primarily consisted of local residents who would attend classes during the day and return home before evening prayers (maghrib). Over time, more students began to stay at the pesantren permanently, leading to the construction of an asrama (dormitory) called Pusaka to accommodate the growing number of male students. Female students initially resided in rooms within the residence of the kyai (head of the pesantren).

Educational Development

In 1994, under the management of Yayasan Al Hidayah Kunir, Pondok Pesantren Darussalam Kunir introduced formal education for junior high school level (SLTP) to meet the community's need for recognized certification. Previously, the curriculum followed the KMI system, which was adapted from the curriculum used at Pesantren Modern Islam (PMI) Gontor. By 1997, the pesantren expanded its offerings to include senior high school education (SLTA), further cementing its status as a comprehensive educational institution.
