About Dominoes
Dominoes, or dominos, is a classic board game played with rectangular tiles known as "dominoes." Each domino is a rectangular tile divided into two square ends, marked with a number of spots or left blank. A standard domino set consists of 28 tiles, often called "bones," "cards," "tiles," "tickets," "stones," or "spinners." Extended sets like double 9 and double 12 are used for games like Mexican Train and Chicken Foot.
Historical Context
The earliest mention of dominoes dates back to the Song Dynasty in China. The game made its way to Italy in the 18th century, evolving into the modern version we know today. Each country has its unique set of domino games: England plays Muggins (All Fives), Scandinavian countries enjoy Bergen, Mexico has Mexican Train, and Spain prefers Matador.
Game Rules
Blocking Game
The simplest form of dominoes involves two players using a double-six set. The tiles are shuffled and each player draws seven tiles. The game starts when one player places the first tile, initiating the line of play where adjacent tiles must match. The game continues until one player runs out of tiles or the game is blocked.
Scoring Game
In scoring games like Muggins (All Fives), players earn points by making the sum of the open ends of the layout a multiple of five (5, 10, 15, 20, etc.). In Bergen, points are scored when the numbers on the open ends are equal. In Mexican Train, the double zero domino is worth 50 points.
Draw Game
In a draw game, players can draw additional tiles from the stock before playing. The game ends when one player uses all their tiles, and the score is calculated based on the remaining tiles and stock.
